What if a big pump works with a small plastic sand filter?

Today, one of our distributors in Saudi Arabia meets a problem. His customer finds that the 1.0hp pump flow becomes smaller after running it for 5 months. He opened the pump and find that there is a lot of sand heap up in the impeller.

“It is very dusty in our area, we are not able to avoid the dusty going into the pump, how should I do?”

The distributor asked for help.

Well, if it is impossible to stop the sand going through the pump, then a bigger pump might be helpful since it has bigger centrifugal force to send the sand or dust out of the impeller.

The distributor agreed with our proposal since this problem never happen in our 1.5hp or bigger pumps. But the only question is, can the 19″ plastic sand filter work with a 1.5hp or bigger pump? The distributor is afraid the 19″(500mm) plastic sand filter can not bear the pressure that a 1.5hp pump produces.

After calculation, David, Jade’s general engineer, thinks it is workable.

Usually we advise 1hp pump to work with a 19″(500mm) sand filter, 1.5hp with 24″(600mm), 2hp with 31″ and 36″ sand filter.

But it is also changeable in some situation.

Usually a plastic sand filter can bear max pressure of 21kg. The working pressure of our 1.5hp pump is 14kg and the max pressure it can reach is 18kg when locked, it is less than 21kg, so it is ok to run 1.5hp pump with a 19″ sand filter just considering the pressure.

Of course we should also consider flow rate, energy consuming etc. for more useful suggestions.

I think most of you have heard about the energy crisis all over the world.

In order to face the crisis, we Chinese factories have been asked to recude work time so as to save energy.

We have been informed by many of our material suppliers that they will work 4 days and stop for 3 days a week from now on. Some evern work 2 days and stop for 5 days a week. 

So, in the near furture, the leading time of our suppliers will be longer than before and result in the longer leading time of our products.

Usually our leading time is 30-45 days, but in the near future, the leading time might be 45-60 days if there’s no stock in our warehouse. This situation will exist until the energy crisis is alleviated.

We do suggest our customers to prepare for orders much ealier than previous. But we will also keep some stock to make sure our customers will not wait too long.

Many pool owners are confused on how to match the right pool pumps for their pools.

There are many charts from different professionals and gives different suggestions, it make things more complicated.

Actually, it is easy to decide how big pump will work for your pools. Usually we advise to run your pool water 3 cycles a day and each cycle should take 3-4 hours, and it is better to run pump 200 days of year.

Based on the above concept, pool owners should choose pool pump with flow rate instead of just horse power as the same horse power pumps can perform different flow rate.

For example, if your pool is 14400 gallon, a pool pump with 4800GPH(14400/3=4800) will be suitable for you, which is equal to 80GPM(4800/60=80).

Flow rate is affected by the pipe size. Please choose the right pipe when doing plumbing.

Here’s a chart on the proper pipe size and flow rate.

algae might not be the culprit. Your pool water could appear to be several colors because you have metal present in the water, which the chlorine has oxidized. So, instead of green algae, your pool could have copper in it. If your pool has a reddish tint to it, your pool water probably has iron in it. Purple or black tints suggest your pool water might have manganese in it.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) has developed new energy-efficiency standards for pool pumps manufactured on or after July 19, 2021.

As was mentioned in previous post, pool pumps should meet minimum WEF after July 19, 2021. Jade has sent all the pool pumps to a qualified and authorized lab to have them tested for WEF.

Fortunately, some of the pumps meet the minimum WEF required by DoE without any improvement. The rest pumps should be improved and re-designed to make them DoE-compliant.

How to know the WEF of a pump?

Please do not get confused with HHP and THP. Here is an article showing the difference and based on that it would be quite easy for you to understand what is going on. I am just quoting it here:

Everything depends on HHP instead of THP.

The pump can be single or variable speed as long as it is fulfilling the DoE new criteria, it is good which is shown in DoE’s table below.

To make it simple, you just need to calculate the HHP of the target pump and if it falls between the range of 0.711 to less than 2.5 then apply the relevant formula to calculate the WEF and compare if the measured WEF is equal to greater than calculated WEF. If it is so then the target pump will qualify for the new DoE rules.

If you would like to test a pump to see if it meets the WEF requirement, first you will have to calculate the C curve and hhp and then do the rest of the testing based on single speed or variable/multiple speed and then calculate the WEFs. If they meet the minimum allowable WEF score as shown above in the table then they qualify new DoE rules otherwise they just fail the new regulations. 

Fortunately, most of Jade’s pool pump WEF is bigger the minimum allowable WEF score, that is to say, Jade pool pumps are allowed to be sold in the USA, the only thing you have to do is to regist on the DoE website as a distributor of our pumps before selling.

About DPPPs Rules - How to Calculate HHP?

HHP means Hydraulic Horsepower, it is calculated as pressure times flow rate and divided by a coefficient.

Here’s the formula:


HHP is in unit of hp, it reflects output of the pump.

P is the pressure with unit of psi.

Q is the flow rate with unit of GPM.

Take Jade product J15001 pump for example, the pump has a flow of 92 GPM at 35 psi, then its HHP is calculated as 35*92/1714=1.88

Note: above psi and GPM data is based on test performed in Jade’s own lab. Should any discrepancy occur between this data and other test result from any authoritative lab, the data from the authority shall prevail.

In kilowatts, the formula of the hydraulic power should be HkW=P*Q/2298 

HkW is in unit of kW, it reflects output watts of the pump.

P is the pressure with unit of psi.

Q is the flow rate with unit of GPM.

As a pool owner, you want an energy-savings, environmentally-friendly swimming pool. You may wish you could easily estimate your energy and cost savings before purchasing a pool pump. Fortunately, this is all possible with the new weighted energy factor scheme! The new weighted energy factor regulations from the Department of Energy (DOE) will make it even easier for pool owners. Here is what you should know.

What is weighted energy factor (WEF)?

WEF ratings are very similar to how we measure the efficiency of a car in miles per gallon (MPG). A WEF rating will allow you to see and compare the energy efficiency of different pool pumps so that you can make an informed choice when purchasing. The higher the WEF rating, the more efficient the pump.

When is this change happening?

By July 19, 2021, all newly manufactured pool pumps that are included under the new rule must be tested and labeled with their WEF rating.

What does this mean for pool owners?

By establishing a WEF rating, your pool pump shopping just got easier. You will now have the tools to easily evaluate and compare how efficient new pumps are. In turn, this will help you reduce the energy you consume to run your pool, resulting in much lower monthly energy bills.

Are you wondering if it is worth it to get a variable speed pump if you live in an area where you pool is not open year round? This is an argument that I see being raised whenever I post a video or article talking about the advantages of getting a variable speed pool pump. It used to be that the most commonly sited objection was that “I only run my pump for a few hours per day” which implies that a variable speed pump would not have any savings in this circumstance. In response to this objection I wrote an article that breaks down this comparison to show that variable speed pumps are better even under this extreme filtration example. As shown in that article running your pump for even a few hours at maximum speed will use more power than a properly scheduled variable speed pump. The drop in power consumption as you reduce the RPM of the motor is so significant it can reduce electrical costs for filtration on pools that have even the most scant filtration schedule. This leads me to the point of this article, in that it is common to see people say that seasonal pools will not benefit as much from variable speed pumps as pools located in a year-round environment. I believe this is a matter of perspective and variable speed pumps are just as important on seasonal pools as they are on year round pools.

Variable speed pump costs – The first item to clarify is pool owners often say that a variable speed pump costs $1000(Jade variable speed pump cost is far below this amount, send inquiry to get the lastest price) so how long will it take to recoup this cost? My problem with this statement is that it completely ignores that single speed pumps are not free. You need a pool pump no matter what and even though a variable speed pump is more money than a single speed pump to buy, it is the difference between these two numbers that you should be concerned with when making this comparison. It is also worth noting that the cost of variable speed pumps in general has been reducing steadily since they hit the market a decade ago. While some of the larger and more expensive models are well in excess of $1000 to buy, these would also correspond to very high end and fancy pools with a lot of features that need to be run by the pump. Expensive pools need expensive pumps and this should be a surprise to nobody. On the entry level of the market there are now many variable speed pumps that are far less than $1000 to buy. An example of this would be the Pentair Superflo VS pump which is (as of this writing) for sale on Amazon for $729 where the single speed version of this pump is $428 which means the difference in price is only $301 and not $1000 or more dollars.

So now we are asking the right questions, like will a seasonal pool save money with a variable speed pump, at least enough to make up the difference in price between a replacement single speed pump and a new variable speed pump. My stance is that a variable speed pump is every bit as important for seasonal pools as they are for pools that operate year round. The once concession that I would be willing to make is that it will take longer to recoup the costs for a variable speed pump on a seasonal pool than it would for a pool that runs the pump 365 days per year. That being said pool pumps are rated for 60 months of operation from manufacturers. A pool in a seasonal area might take 10 years or more to reach 60 months of operation, where a year round pool could reach that service life expectation in half that time.

A 25,000 gallon pool in a cold climate area of Canada and a 25,000 gallon pool in Florida both require a similar amount of filtration as established with the industry standard of three to four turnovers of a pool being required every 24 hours. This means that upgrading to a variable speed pump will have the potential to save the exact same amount of electricity for both of these pools. As shown by manufacturers of VS pumps, and from articles like this one about how much power does a pool pump use, pools with single speed pumps can reduce electrical use by as much as 80% to 90%. It does not matter where the pool is located, or how many months per year the pool operates, each pool has the same ability to benefit from upgrading to an energy saving variable speed pump.

Both seasonal and year round pools benefit from variable speed pumps – Even though it will take longer for a pool in a colder climate to recoup the investment in their variable speed pump, a pump that only operates for half the year or less will still be in operation long after a pump in a year-round climate has reached the end of its service life and required replacement. Of course all of this is a moot point since as of July 18, 2021 it will be law for all pools to have a variable speed pump for the filtration pump (or a pump that meets an efficiency requirement that currently can only be fulfilled by variable speed pumps). This means when your current pump fails you will be required to upgrade your pump. This is not a move to save you money on electricity. The fact that you will save a substantial amount of electricity is secondary to the point of eliminating wasteful, energy hog appliances that have better option available. Thinking green starts at home, and arguing against variable speed pumps reveals that you have not done the math on the electrical savings potential, and refute changes that undoubtedly will improve the energy footprint of owning a swimming pool. Variable speed pumps are useful on every swimming pool that currently has a single speed pump regardless of where that pool is located, and how many months per year you get to use it.
